Glorious Mysteries (Wednesdays and Sundays)

The Glorious Mysteries are the last mysteries of the Catholic Rosary. They correspond to the chaplet that is said on Wednesdays and on Sundays. After the Joyful Mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries and the Sorrowful Mysteries, they speak of Christ’s resurrection and the path He created between heaven and earth.

How to Pray and Meditate Upon the Glorious Mysteries?

These last mysteries of the rosary speak of the glory of Christ and Mary. In order to enter these different mysteries, one must go beyond the Gospels, which for the most part stop just before :

  • Either by the Holy Scripture of the Acts of the Apostles or the Book of Revelation

  • Or with representations through paintings or stained glass especially for the last two that refer to Mary.

For each of these mysteries, a decade of the chaplet is said : 1 Our Father, 10 Hail Marys and 1 Glory Be.

These mysteries of the rosary are usually said on Wednesdays and Sundays but because they give us hope and faith as christians, they can be prayed and meditated upon whenever we feel like, especially when we are discouraged and feeling down.

The Five Glorious Mysteries

The Resurrection

“Then the angel said to the women in reply, “Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as He said.” (Matthew 28:  5 - 6)

Before beginning to recite the Our Father which introduces the decade of Hail Marys, we can offer God these thoughts : “Lord Jesus I offer you this decade in honor of your triumphant resurrection, and I ask that through this mystery and the intercession of your Holy Mother, a living faith.”

  • The fruit of this mystery is faith and conversion of hearts. The resurrection is at the heart of the christian faith. What would be the message of Christ if He hadn’t vanquished death? We believe that He gave us Eternal life and that through Him we have been saved.

You can add this sentence, a “clausula” to each Hail Mary : “and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus the resurrected and vanquer of evil and death.”

You can end the decade with : “Blessings of the mystery of the Resurrection, descend into my soul and make me truly faithful.”

Jesus’ Ascension

“ As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky as he went, when suddenly two men in white were standing beside them, and they said, 'Why are you Galileans standing here looking into the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will come back in the same way as you have seen him go to heaven.” (Acts of the Apostles 1: 9 - 11)

You can start the decade with this prayer: “Lord Jesus I offer you this decade in honor of your glorious ascension, and I ask that through this mystery and the intercession of your Holy Mother, a great desire for paradise and strong belief.”

  • The fruit of the mystery is hope and a desire for heaven. It is this hope combined with completely turning ourselves towards this objective that allows us to firmly move forward to Christ.

You can add this sentence to each Hail Mary : “and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus who ascended into heaven .”

You can end the decade with : “Blessings of the mystery of Jesus’ Ascension, descend into my soul and make me truly heavenly.”

Pentecost

“When Pentecost day came round, they had all met together, when suddenly there came from a sound heaven as of a violent wind which filled the entire house in which they were sitting; and there appeared to them tongues as of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them.4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak different languages as the Spirit gave them power to express themselves.” (Acts of the Apostles 2: 2 - 4)

You can start the decade with this prayer: “Holy Spirit, I offer you this decade in honor of the mystery of Pentecost , and I ask that through this mystery and the intercession of your Holy Mother, the wisdom to know and practice the truth and help others to do the same.”

  • The fruit of the mystery is charity and apostolic zeal. From Pentecost on, the apostles left to announce the Good News to the world. Our faith is nothing if it isn’t turned towards others.

You can add this sentence to each Hail Mary : “and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus who sent the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles .”

You can end the decade with : “Blessings of the mystery of Pentecost, descend into my soul and make me truly wise according to God.”

Mary’s Assumption

“Lord Jesus I offer you this decade in honor of the Immaculate Conception and the Ascension in body and soul of your Holy Mother, and I ask that through these two mysteries and the intercession of your Holy Mother, a true devotion to her to live and die well.”

  • The fruit of the mystery is the grace of a good death and a devotion to Mary. In the Hail Mary, we ask her to pray for us especially at the two most important moments of our lives : now ( the present moment) and at the hour of our death (when we meet our Father).

You can add this sentence to each Hail Mary : “and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus who rose you to heaven .”

You can end the decade with : “Blessings of the mystery of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption of Mary, descend into my soul and make me truly devoted to Mary.”

The Crowning of Mary in Heaven

“I offer you Lord Jesus, through these twenty mysteries of your life, your death and passion, your glory and merits of your Holy Mother, to convert sinners, to help those in agony, to deliver souls from purgatory, and to give us the grace to live and die well, and your glory to see You face to face and to love you for all eternity. Amen.”

  • The fruit of the mystery is perseverance and trust in Mary.

You can add this sentence to each Hail Mary : “and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus who crowned you Queen .”
