Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
(Matthew 5:14-16)

Passage from Matthew’s gospel, chapter 5

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”  (Matthew 5:13-19)

To be light for the world

Jesus asks us to be the light of the world. We know from the words of the evangelist John that Jesus is the light of the world, in the Prologue of his gospel, saint John testifies: “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world." (John 1:9) and “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”  (John 1:5). Jesus himself, speaking to the Pharisees said: I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of to life.” (John 8:12) Jesus therefore asks us to reflect his own light, to be witnesses and bearers so that all men can come to him. The vocation of the Christian is explicit in this gospel, it is to radiate for our brothers, especially those of our house, that is to say our family. By radiating the light of God, all will see clear to go to Christ and, through him, receive salvation. It is by living the commandments of God, receiving the sacraments and drawing from prayer that a Christian becomes light for those around them.
