John 16:33

Passage from the Gospel of John, chapter 16

Now I leave the world, and I go to I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.’ Then Jesus’ disciples said, ‘Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God. Do you now believe?’ Jesus replied. ‘A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:28-33)

To have peace in Jesus, who overcame the world

It is in Jesus that true peace is found, and Christ invites us all to draw this peace from him.

In Chapter 14, Jesus has already promised his peace: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” (John 14:27). Here Jesus comes back to warn against a misunderstanding of his words. The peace he promises and gives is not that of men, but that of the heart. It is the inner peace that flows from peace with God. It is the tranquility of the one who fulfills the will of the father daily and finds in His rest in themselves. Jesus does not hide reality from his apostles and all his faithful: As long as earthly life lasts, the world brings to man its share of suffering and trials. However, this world has only one time and then comes eternal life where evil no longer has a hold on man. Jesus overcame the world because through his death and resurrection he opened the doors of heaven and gave man the opportunity to free himself definitively from Satan’s training.

To overcome the world is to wear your cross with love. The courage of which Jesus speaks consists in giving his suffering a redemptive value, for Jesus did not come to remove suffering but to make it a means of redemption.
