Church definition of wisdom
According to the Catholic Church, wisdom is the balanced, natural or acquired knowledge of things. It also refers to inspired knowledge of things divine and human. It's an attribute of God and a beautiful spiritual quality. Moreover, wisdom comes from God , for it has its source in His Word.
The gift of wisdom is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. It enables us to discern between good and evil.
The difference between wisdom and knowledge
The book of Proverbs explains that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: "The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord , and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.!" Proverbs 9:10)
.
So wisdom is acquired by learning to live in the fear of God, by obeying, respecting and worshiping him.
That's the difference between wisdom and knowledge. It's not just a matter of knowing God's teachings "by heart"; you have to apply them to your life and respect them. The Bible explains that studying the Holy Scriptures and knowing them in their entirety does not make you wiser. It gives access to knowledge but not to wisdom, and often makes you proud. On the other hand, knowing the Scriptures and following their commands does mature:
"I surpass my enemies in skill, for I make your wills mine forever.
I surpass all my masters in wisdom, for I meditate on your demands.
I surpass the elders in understanding, for I keep your precepts" Psalm 118:98-100.
Finally, to achieve wisdom, we must realize that we are all part of God's plan , and that we must surrender ourselves to His divine will; trust blindly, reject pride, ask forgiveness, show humility and give thanks to God.
The 7 pillars of wisdom
The seven pillars of wisdom are found in the Old Testament book of Proverbs.
Here they are:
Fear of God: "The beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.!" Proverbs 9, 10
Reason or reflection: "For wisdom will enter your heart, knowledge will be at home in your soul, Discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you." Proverbs 2:10-11
Humility: "When pride comes, disgrace comes; but with the humble is wisdom." Proverbs 11, 2
Thirst for knowledge of God : "My son, if you receive my words and treasure my commands, Turning your ear to wisdom, inclining your heart to understanding; Yes, if you call for intelligence, and to understanding raise your voice; If you seek her like silver, and like hidden treasures search her out, Then will you understand the fear of the Lord ; the knowledge of God you will find; For the Lord gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;" Proverbs 2:1-6
Discernment: "I, Wisdom, dwell with prudence, and useful knowledge I have." Proverbs 8, 12
Teaching or mentoring: "On the lips of the intelligent is found wisdom, but a rod for the back of one without sense.!" Proverbs 10, 13
Renewed intelligence: "Wisdom can remain silent in the discerning heart, but among fools she must make herself known!" Proverbs 14:33
Notion of wisdom in the Bible
In the Old Testament
In the Old Testament, the term wisdom is used 167 times. The book of Job , some of the Psalms , the book of Proverbs and the book of Ecclesiastes are the books that most deal with the notion of wisdom.
Indeed, all the speeches in the book of Job are a confrontation between human wisdom and divine wisdom, as Job seeks to prove to his friends, who are convinced of their own wisdom, that it is nothing compared to God's.
In the book of Proverbs, we learn that true wisdom comes from God : "Then will you understand the fear of the L ord ; the knowledge of God you will find; For the L ord gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;" Proverbs 2:5-6
Finally, with the exception of the last chapter, the entire book of Ecclesiastes is written from the point of view of human wisdom.
In the New Testament
In the New Testament, the term wisdom is used 54 times. St. Paul 's first letter to the Corinthians and St. James' letter are the most evocative of this notion:
- "Since, indeed, by a provision of God's wisdom, the world, with all its wisdom, has failed to recognize God, it has pleased God to save believers by that foolishness which is the proclamation of the Gospel. While the Jews demand miraculous signs, and the Greeks seek wisdom, we proclaim a crucified Messiah, a scandal for the Jews, madness for the pagan nations. But for those whom God calls, whether Jews or Greeks, this Messiah, this Christ, is the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men." 1 Corinthians 1:21-35
"But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace." James 3:17-18
