Millions of people are affected

Millions of people around the world are deprived of their freedom and forced to live in slavery. For these men and women, Saint Josephine Bakhita is a model of hope. The Catholic Church encourages the faithful to follow in her footsteps.

Today marks the importance of mobilizing everyone to fight against all forms of trafficking of human beings.  The dignity of each human being is at the heart of this action.

From awareness to action

The Pope wants people of all countries and origins to become aware of a global phenomenon which goes beyond the responsibility of anyone state. He calls for a true mobilization against this plague:

We must all better analyze the situation and mobilize consciences: from consciousness to prayer, from prayer to solidarity, from solidarity to action, so that the slave trade and the new forms of slavery may disappear.

Prayer against Human Trafficking

February 8th is the World Day of Prayer against Trafficking in Human Beings. It was instituted by Pope Francis in 2015. And the choice of this day is of no coincidence since it corresponds to the feast of Saint Josephine Bakhita, a Sudanese girl who was kidnapped at the age of seven, sold as a slave, mistreated and then set free.
