Eat, Drink and be Merry!

Proverbs 1:23

Lo ! I will pour out to you my spirit, I will acquaint you with my words.

Meditation

"Eat, drink, and be merry, bite the dust, the blind leading the blind, rise and shine, go the extra mile, nothing but skin and bones, the sign of the times etc ! Take a minute to just think about how many expressions we use daily, when talking, that actually all come from the Bible, both the Old and New Testament! They all give colour to our language and help illustrate what we are trying to say.

A proverb is exactly that - a simple, concrete, traditional saying that expresses a perceived truth based on common sense or experience.

What's important is it's  based on a perceived truth, common sense or experience! The Book of Proverbs in the Old Testament  was written to teach wisdom. Wisdom was practical expertise. In the ancient Near East, people believed that only the gods were wise because of their divinity and that humans needed the gods to grant them wisdom.

It shall come to pass; I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy ? your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below.  (Book of Joel 3: 1 - 3)

God does exactly that with each of us if we allow Him. It is so true that to be able to understand the Scriptures with our heart and soul, we first need to receive the Holy Spirit in full. Otherwise, the Scriptures remain boring and unrelated to what we feel and experience in our actual lives. God repeatedly tells us, that He will POUR OUT His Spirit upon us. Christianity and the Church exist today because God did exactly that; He poured out His Spirit upon the Apostles!

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues  as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. (Acts 2: 1 - 4)

Meet the Challenge

Let us eat, drink and be merry at the banquet of the Lord in Holy Communion. Today is All Saints; the perfect day for the Holy Spirit to pour out all of his gifts upon everyone of us! A shower of grace to wake up our souls and put them on fire for the Lord and His Word! Let these graces transform us for the upcoming season of Advent where we prepare ourselves for the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savoir.

God promises that He will acquaint us with His word and believe it or not He keeps His promises! Put yourself to the challenge!

  • Pray or sing to the Holy Spirit.
  • Open your Bible and read a short passage for about 3 minutes.
  • Close your eyes and make a picture of it in your mind.
  • Think of how it may touch you in your life. (Don't be discouraged if it means nothing as it takes practice and trust).

Let's Pray

Today let us call upon the Holy Spirit to pour out Himself upon us, giving us all of His gifts: wisdom, understanding, piety, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, and the fear of God.

“O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven, did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul the work of Your grace and Your love.

Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom, that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal;

 the Spirit of Understanding, to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth;

the Spirit of Counsel, that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven;

the Spirit of Fortitude, that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation;

the Spirit of Knowledge, that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints;

the Spirit of Piety, that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable;

the Spirit of Fear, that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him.

Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Your true disciples and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen."

Let's Praise Him

Welcome Holy Spirit!

Breathe into me Holy Spirit

Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy. (Saint Augustine)

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Col 4:6
