4. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied." (Mt 5:6)

🙏 Questions for reflection

  • When I undertake works of charity, do I do so as a duty or with a genuine thirst?
  • When I see injustice, do I measure it against a human standard of justice, or Divine Justice?

  • Servais Pinckaers, OP The Pursuit of Happiness - God's Way: Living the Beatitudes. Pinckaers, a noted twentieth century Dominican moral theologian, tried to place the virtues at the centre of moral theology in the years after the Second Vatican Council. Much of his teaching was framed around the Sermon on the Mount, and his reflections on the Beatitudes are the fruit of years of teaching in Fribourg.
  • Ersamo Leiva-Merikakis, Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word: Meditations on the Gospel According to St Matthew. Volume one of a massive four volume commentary (the final volume is yet to be published) on Matthew's Gospel. Volume One contains his reflections on the Infancy Narratives and the Sermon on the Mount.
  • Robert Ellsberg, The Duty of Delight: The Diaries of Dorothy Day. This (rather large) edited collection of Dorothy Day's diary entries record her intimate struggles and concerns, and a testament to a woman hungering and thirsting after justice.

The Beatitudes

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Col 4:6
