St. Dominic
Saint Dominic, a child's soul
(† 1221)
Nobody had a simpler, more joyful soul than Dominic, the founder of the order of the Preaching Friars, commonly called “Dominicans”. A talented preacher, born in a noble Spanish family, Dominic always refused the proposals to be appointed bishop, preferring a humble life among the monks his brothers. He had a child's soul, very humane and deeply devoted to the Virgin Mary. He is even attributed the invention of the rosary. What is certain is that he was gratified with an apparition of the Blessed Virgin under the name – new at the time – of Our Lady of the Rosary. He popularized this way of praying and made Our Lady of the Rosary the patron of the Dominican Order.
