Day 4: Novels

Novels give us a privileged insight into the shared experience of human beings through all ages: life and death, love and friendship, loss and grief. In this conversation, Fr Timothy Radcliffe speaks about the redemptive character of literature and how it helps us to be open to the other, and to understand each person as a unique and unrepeatable work of God.

Scripture passages for meditation

Ending of the Gospel of John (21:25)

There are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

Moses and the Burning Bush (Exodus 3:1-6, 13-14)

Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian; and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked, and lo, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here am I.” Then he said, “Do not come near; put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, ‘What is his name?' what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”

The Prophet Elijah before the presence of God (1 Kings 19:9-13)

Elijah came to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the people of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thy altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.” And he said, “Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

Questions for further reflection

  • Reading novels expands my view of the world. Do I let Scripture deepen and challenge my ideas about God? Do I wonder at the mystery of God, beyond human understanding?
  • God also calls us 'not servants, but friends' (John 15:15). How can He be beyond our understanding, and yet so close to everyone of us?
  • The lives of the saints reflect the Gospel in infinitely varied ways. How important is for me their example?

Community prayer

A Prayer of St John Henry Newman

Dear Jesus, Help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go. Flood my soul with Your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly, That my life may only be a radiance of Yours. Shine through me, and be so in me That every soul I come in contact with May feel Your presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me, but only Jesus! Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as You shine, So to shine as to be a light to others; The light, O Jesus will be all from You; none of it will be mine; It will be you, shining on others through me. Let me thus praise You the way You love best, by shining on those around me. Let me preach You without preaching, not by words but by my example, By the catching force of the sympathetic influence of what I do, The evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You. Amen.
