Sacred Heart Novena - Day 1

DAY ONE :

Let us pray to our Lord Jesus Christ, who witnessed His love by coming into the world to save us:

God of mercy and of love, you sent your only begotten Son into the world to accomplish the work of our Redemption. Ever since that time, He has loved us with a human heart and has thus made visible to us His love. We give you thanks and praise for your goodness, and we implore you to penetrate us evermore deeply by the great mystery of your love. We ask this in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

READING :

“But when the kindness and generous love of God our saviour appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our saviour, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life. This saying is trustworthy.”   The Epistle of Saint Paul to Titus, 3:4-8

MEDITATION  :

“If you knew the gift of God”, John 4: 10. If mankind only knew whose face reveals itself to our interior, edifying us and conforming us to itself. We would surely seek to imitate its traits. This face, is also the heart that abides inside us. The face reveals the heart. The face is the revelation of the heart. It is always about His face…

The Mystery of His Face is also that of its apparent absence, one that is capable of unveiling in our hearts a more total presence of His Face. Our face then is the face of the grace of God! In fact, it is all about learning to recognize His Face in all things. Our lives flow from grace to grace, from a face already resembling that of Christ to one that is becoming ever-more like His. There is unity in this, because it is one and the same face. The Incarnation of this face is revealed by the heart, which is the Holy Spirit.

He needed to come just as He came….To see this face requires a certain distancing from the things of the world, just as love requires.  The world is necessary, but love is only revealed with the eyes of the heart…The face reveals the heart and in love, the eyes contemplate the face of the other, so that the hearts may meet. The Lord has done such marvellous things ! Everything is marvellous when one abides in His Heart! The meaning of the devotion itself to the Heart of Christ is found herein.

- Father Marie-Joseph le Guillou, OP

Eternal Father of Mercy, look upon the Heart of your Son and upon the love he showed us in becoming man.  For the sake of this love, receive our prayer and help us to love him in return, he who lives and reigns with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit , now and forever . Amen.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION TO THE SACRED HEART

I (N.), give and consecrate to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, my person, my life, my actions, my pains and sufferings, so that I may be unwilling to make use of any part of my being save to honor, love, and glorify the Sacred Heart. It is my unchanging intention to be all His and to do all for love of Him. I renounce at the same time with all my heart whatever can displease Him. I, therefore, take You, O Sacred Heart, for the only object of my love, the protector of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy, the atonement for the faults of my life, and the secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be then, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God the Father, and turn away from me the punishment of His just anger. O Heart of love, I put my confidence in You, because I fear everything from my own sinfulness and weakness. I hope for all things from Your mercy and generosity. Destroy in me all that can displease or resist Your holy Will. Let Your pure love impress You so deeply upon my heart that I may never forget You or be separated from You. May my name, by your loving kindness, be written In You, because in You I desire to place all my happiness and all my glory in living and dying in very bondage to you. - Saint Margaret-Mary Alacoque, 1647-1690
