David or Goliath

Main post image

1Samuel 16:13

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.

1Samuel 17:45

David said to the Philistine (Goliath), You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Meditation

As a child you probably had the story of “David and Goliath” read to you. You may still even have a mental picture of it in your mind; a little shepherd boy with a slingshot and some small stones who killed a giant named Goliath. Everyone thought that David was out of his mind and would be killed by Goliath!

We all have a David and Goliath living inside of us. If you take a closer look at yourself, you may see that depending on the problem, you choose to be either David or Goliath. Most of us are like Goliath and want to solve our daily problems ourselves without the help of anyone, especially God, our heavenly Father. We're adults and want independence and freedom! We don't consider ourselves “children” of God. It's only in very desperate situations that we become like David, turning to God, screaming for the Holy Spirit to enlighten us and give us "powerful" insight and eventually  perform a miracle!

We have forgotten what Jesus said “ Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 18:3)

We seldom take the time to sit, pray and LISTEN to Jesus. The idea of praying and asking the Holy Spirit to TAKE OVER and act POWERFULLY is a million miles away. The way we see the problem is probably not the way God sees it. Remember Jesus carries your cross with you.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11: 28-30)

Meet the Challenge

God wants us to slay the Goliath within us and win the victory which separates us from Him. This coming week, try and take the time to make two lists; the first is when you ask the Holy Spirit to give you guidance and the second is when you try to do it by yourself. Which list is the longest? If there is a big difference between the two, what can you do to change it? How can you become more like a "child" of God, trusting in His merciful and unconditional love; and having the humility to say sorry, and ask for His help? What is your viewpoint on the sacrament of reconciliation? Do you believe that God is your "Father" and wants what is best for you?

Let's Pray

First pray the "Our Father" very slowly thinking of its meaning. Then follow by this prayer or whatever comes to your mind.

Dear Jesus, I'm having a hard time trying to believe that God is truly my heavenly Father. Teach me how to love Him just like you do. Show me Jesus how to let the Holy Spirit into my day to day life. Help me to listen to His advice and invite his POWERFUL presence into my life so that I can make decisions in accordance with Your will. Thank you Jesus for always being at my side.

Let's Praise Him

Breathe into me Holy Spirit

Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy. (Saint Augustine)
