Mary, specially loved by God
And the Virgin's name was Mary.
(Luke 3:4)
It was not by chance that Anne and Joachim called their daughter Mary. For the Jews, a person's name is very important. It says something about that person. The Hebrew name Myriam (Mary in English) is often used in the Bible. It can have as many as fi fty different meanings! In Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke, it meant “Sovereign Lady” or “Lady”, like when we call her “Our Lady”. In Egyptian it meant “Loved by God”. How beautiful! Mary really is God's beloved!
I love to use this sweet name as a prayer, with the greatest reverence.
- M ary, chosen before time began,
A ngels and saints love you, and God loves you most of all.
R oyal Queen of Heaven and of mankind,
Y our love and watchful tenderness fi ll our hearts and our lives.
