Who Is Your Compass?

Deuteronomy 34:9

Now Joshua, son of Nun, was filled with the spirit of wisdom, since Moses had laid his hands upon him; and so the Israelites gave him their obedience, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

Meditation

Moses has just died in the plains of Moab and passed on his "authority" to Joshua. Joshua is filled with "wisdom". Wisdom is one of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit ! He must now lead the Israelites out of the desert to the promised land. Because he is "wise" they have promised to "obey". In other words they trust his authority. Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgement. As they say, "knowledge is knowing that tomato is a fruit and wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad". From a biblical perspective, wisdom is "the ability to judge and direct human affairs according to divine truth" (St. Thomas Aquinas). Before Moses death, he reminds his people several times, the main commandment of God that all the other commandments are based on.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6: 4 -6)

Later on in the New Testament, Jesus repeats this commandment and adds on to it!

The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:31)

Meet the Challenge

Throughout history we have always been tempted to do and follow what's "in" as we feel that we are accepted and liked by others only if we "obey" the trend. In today's society, with modern technology, it is even more so. So much information is out there that we feel almost lost and without guidance. Have you ever asked yourself who or what do you obey and why? Is God your daily compass? When you make daily decisions do you use "wisdom" and take these two commandments into consideration?

Let's Pray

Lord, I have decided that I want You to be my compass. Show me how to obey your commandment of loving You with all my heart, my soul and my strength. May I always turn to You in all of my daily decisions so that You actually become part of my life and not just when I pray to you. May my life become a living prayer. Help me to see You in every person that I meet without passing any judgement. Give me the necessary wisdom to choose what's right from wrong. Thank you for your infinite and fatherly patience in teaching me to become who You created me to be.

Let's Praise Him

Breathe into me Holy Spirit

Breathe into me, Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that I may love only what is holy. Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I may defend all that is holy. Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I may always be holy. (Saint Augustine)
