PRAY AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING

St. Josephine's story

Josephine Bakhita, a Young abused slave who became a saint and a free woman.

Josephine Bakhita was kidnapped as a child, abused, and sold several times as a slave: she was so deeply traumatized that she forgot her mother tongue, the name of her native village and even her real name; the name Bakhita meaning ‘the lucky one' in Arabic, was given to her by one of her masters..

She has no earthly possessions and she is entirely given to God “her good master”, as she often repeats.” He is the boss; I, only his poor creature”, “ such is the Master's will”, “Everything as the Boss wants”, she repeats. The Lord molds her as he watches over her; she the free woman par excellence.

Extract from the homely of Pope John Paul II at the Canonization ceremony of Josephine Bakhita, on October 1st, 2000.

“ In today's world, a multitude of women continue to be the victims of reprisals, even in our modern developed societies. In Josephine Bakhita, we find a brilliant defender of true emancipation. The story of her life inspires not a passive acceptance, but models a firm resolve to work effectively to free young girls and women from the oppression and the violence they endure, and to give them back the dignity they are lawfully entitled to. “
