Without Jesus

That evening Jesus Disciples went down to the shore to wait for him. But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn't come back, they got into the boat and headed across the Lake to Capernum.                   John 6:16-17

Jesus slipped away from the crowds who wanted to make him king because of him multiplying the bread. He left his disciples, like St. Jude, behind. They waited for him, but as darkness fell, they left to go on the sea.

Why didn't the disciples wait for Jesus? How did they know where to go? Had Jesus told them? Were they in a rush? Why leave at night when it would be worse to travel?

Do we ever rush ahead of Jesus? Not talking to him about our goals and dreams, but just in a hurry to run off and do our thing? Do we sometimes get ourself tangled into trouble because we don't consider that it is dark and maybe not the right time to leave or start or go?

When suddenly they saw Jesus walking on the water toward the board. They were terrified, but her called out to them, “Don't be afraid. I am here.” John 6:19-20

A storm hits the lake, but the disciples aren't afraid until they see Jesus on the water. You would think this would make them happy, so why fear? Did they not know the strength of his power? Were they afraid they were in trouble with him? Did they think they had it handled?

Perhaps it is because of the darkness, but they recognize Jesus because of his words. He tells them not to be afraid, I AM is here. Once he speaks, they are eager to let him aboard and all their fear washes away. They easily reach the shore.

Let us listen for the words of God in our own life. Do we know him by more than just sight? Do we allow him in the boat of our life to help us? Let us wait for him to be by our side, as he surely wants to be since he will walk across waves to reach us.
