St Elizabeth of Hungary
The nobility of the heart
Engaged at the age of 4, married at 14, and widowed at 20, Elizabeth, the daughter of a king, died at 24, worn out by a life entirely dedicated to the poor. Her heart was prompt to serve, her love a burning fire! She loved her husband, and yet gave herself totally to the Sovereign of her soul. 'I cannot wear my golden crown when God has a crown of thorns' she replied to the Queen Mother who criticized her when the young queen entered a church to lay her royal crown at the foot of Jesus' cross. As a widow, she renounced the world, dedicated her life and property to the destitute and founded a hospital. Her life on earth was short and she was soon ready for the life of Eternal Love.
