Meditation on the Life of St. Anthony 5

St. Anthony sailed to Africa, willing to shed his blood for Jesus. But when he arrived, he came down with a fever which forced him to spend the winter in bed. He meditated and prayed. No radiant visions illuminated his path, but he resolutely surrendered his will, and his desire for martyrdom became a desire for winning souls.

O my soul, help me to remember that my way may not be God's way, and that God knows what is best for me. Like St. Anthony, I hope to have the wisdom to pray when disappointments come and life seems dark. It is only then that my eyes will see clearly the path of peace, and with St. Anthony I will discover that the new way, revealed by God, is a greater source of joy than the old.

Miraculous Responsory

If then you ask for miracles, Death, error, all calamities, The leprosy and demons fly, And health succeeds infirmities. The sea obeys and fetters break, And lifeless limbs you restore, While treasures lost are found again, When young and old, your aid implore. All dangers vanish at your prayer, And direst need does quickly flee. Let those who know your power proclaim: Let Papuans say: “These are of thee.” The sea obeys and fetters break, And lifeless limbs you restore, While treasures lost are found again, When young and old, your aid implore. To Father, Son, May glory be, And Holy Spirit eternally. The sea obeys and fetters break, And lifeless limbs you restore, While treasures lost are found again, When young and old, your aid implore. Pray for us, Saint Anthony; That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Col 4:6
