Day 16 : Defeating Temptation

Main post image

Here is some advice from Reverend Rick Warren in “The Purpose Driven Life” to help you overcome temptation:

1. Fix your gaze on something else. Ignoring a temptation is far more effective than fighting it upfront. When you try to fight it, you are actually placing it at the center of your attention, and it invades your spirit. It is more efficient to go to another place, turn off your TV, move away from people who criticize or provoke you, etc.

2. Entrust your struggles to your friends or to a support group.

3. Resist the devil. Satan can NEVER force you to act against your will. All he can do is put ideas into your head. To tell him “no”, you must say “yes” to Christ. A powerful weapon to fight off the devil is memorizing the Word of God. In the desert, Jesus refused every temptation from Satan by citing him the Word of God. Learn some Bible verses and ask for Jesus' Spirit, (e.g. through the powerful intercession of the Archangel Michael), to defeat temptation. Divine truth will then remain in your heart. And that makes you stronger!

4. Be aware of your weakness. Don't put yourself into situations where you are likely to be tempted. Let's face it, not avoiding such situations, whether you end up sinning or not, is hypocritical, and a sin in itself, called ‘‘not avoiding occasion of sin''.

 A question to ask yourself:

Who could become your spiritual partner and help you overcome a tenacious temptation by praying for you?

Community prayer

A prayer of Mother Theresa

Help me to spread Thy fragrance everywhere I go. Flood my soul with Thy spirit and love. Penetrate and possess my whole Return to being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Thine. Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Thy presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus. Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be a light to others.

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Col 4:6
