This litany reminds us of the blood our Lord shed for us during his passion, as well as the blood offered in the Eucharist for our salvation. As St. Peter said, "you were redeemed not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ" (1 Peter 1: 18-19). It is also an official litany, approved for public use in 1960 by Pope John XXIII. When the litany is prayed in public, the responses to the leader are in italics.

Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, You have appointed Your only begotten Son the Redeemer of the world and willed to be appeased by his Blood. Grant, we beg You, that we may worthily adore the price of our salvation, and through its power be safeguarded from the evils of the present life, so that we may rejoice in its fruits forever in heaven.
