Day 8 Novena to the Sacred Heart
Let us pray to the Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, our role model, whose example we shall follow.
Lord God, clothe us with the sanctity of the Heart of Your Son and ignite us with his love. Make our heart akin to his, so that people would recognize us as his disciples. We ask You through Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
From the gospel of Matthew 11, 25-30:
'At that time Jesus said in reply, "I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him. Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light".'
Meditation with Fr. Marie Joseph le Guillou:
Christ was sent by the Father to impart the Spirit, so that men would remain in the love of the Father and the Son, and experiment resting in trinitarian love: "As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and remain in his love." Jn 15, 9-10.
Christ is the one who conveys the Spirit of God to mankind, by taking the place of the sinners before his Father. By being one in Christ by the Spirit, men can be loved by the same love Christ is loved, the love of the Father. By experiencing the love of the Father, our life tends to become like Christ’s.
Lord Jesus, our Shepherd, in the kindness of your Heart, guide us on the path that leads to the Father. Left to ourselves, we are weak. Strengthen our love for you, so that we may follow you freely, you who live and reign forever and ever. Amen.
Here's how to proceed for the Chaplet to the Sacred Heart of Jesus-Christ:
- Begin with the following prayer on the Crucifix (written by St. Ignatius of Loyola, or St. Thomas of Aquinas):
'Soul of Christ, sanctify me/Body of Christ, save me/Blood of Christ, inebriate me/Water from the side of Christ, wash me/Passion of Christ, strengthen me/O Good Jesus, hear me/Within your wounds, hide me/Permit me not to be separated from you/From the wicked foe, defend me/At the hour of my death, call me and bid me come to you/That with your saints I may praise you forever and ever. Amen.
- On the large beads say:
'O sweetest Heart of Jesus, I implore that I may ever love you more and more.'
- On the small beads say:
'Sweet Heart of Jesus, be my love.'
- At the end of each decade, say:
'Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation'.
-Upon completing the chaplet, say:
'May the Heart of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament, be blessed, adored and praised with grateful affection, at every moment in all the tabernacles of the world, even to the end of time.'
