St. Martin of Tours
Feast day : November 11th
Patron of : poor, soldiers, winemakers, conscientious objectors and tailors.
St. Martin of Tours was born in what is known today as Hungary around 316 AD. He came from a pagan family but decided to become a Christian at the age of ten. His conversion to Christianity began when, as a soldier near the gates of Amiens, France, he gave half of his coat to a poor beggar shivering in the streets. That night he had a dream of Jesus surrounded by angels wearing the half of the coat. Jesus said to him, “Martin, a mere catechumen has clothed me. ”. He lived in Tours and studied under St. Hilary of Poitiers. He was an extraordinary evangelist and he started a monastery which still exists today, the Ligugé Abbey (Benedictine).
