Divine mercy
The devotion to the Divine Mercy is based on Christ's demands to St. Faustina during His apparitions to her. Also called the "Apostle of Divine Mercy", Faustina shared Jesus' revelations to her with the world through her diary. There are many big elements of the devotion, such as the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Divine Mercy Novena. After news of her experience reached the Vatican, a special celebration was also instituted: we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday on the first Sunday after Easter. The prayers to the Divine Mercy invite us to pray to our Merciful Father for the world's salvation entirely and remember how much human misery and suffering affect God’s Heart. As St. Faustina would say: "Jesus, I trust in You!"
The Divine Mercy Chaplet is one of the many prayers Jesus revealed to Faustina during His apparitions between September 13 and 14, 1935. This prayer can be recited using a common rosary. Christ promised great graces to those who fervently pray the Chaplet. "The souls that say this chaplet will be embraced by My mercy during their lifetime and especially at the hour of their death." (Diary, 754)
The Divine Mercy Novena consists in reciting the prayer of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for nine successive days. Each day of the novena, we dedicate special prayer intentions for souls: all humankind (and especially sinners), the souls of priests and religious, all devout and faithful souls, those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know Jesus, the souls who have separated themselves from the Church, the meek and humble souls and the souls of little children, the souls who especially venerate and glorify His mercy, the souls detained in purgatory, and souls who have become lukewarm. The novena can be recited in preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday. In this case, the first day of prayer starts on Good Friday. Of course, you can begin the novena any other day of the year.
