The Christianization that took place in the sixteenth century was not something merely accidental. Divine grace was at work when the people of this region had their first contact with the image of the Santo Nino. It is an important historical fact, rich in religious meaning, that on January 1, 1571 the village kingdom of Sugbu was renamed "Villa del Santo Nino," and thus the first city of the Philippines was placed under the patronage of the Child Jesus. In a particular way the church thank God that the tiny Christian community of Sugbo, under the patronage of the Infant Jesus, has now become a flourishing archdiocese of two million people, almost all of whom are Catholics. It can truly be said that growth in faith and Christian living has been until now a constant feature of the church in Cebu as well as the whole Philippines. The glorious past gives hope for the future.

A bit of history about the Santo Nino de Cebu

Magellan presented this small sacred figure, along with other religious gifts to the Cebu chieftain's wife Hara Amihan to celebrate their conversion to Christianity.

The elaborately dressed carved wooden figure, believed to be of Belgian origin, traveled with Magellan on his voyage of discovery and conquest from Spain to the Philippines, making this the oldest Catholic treasure in the islands.

After Magellan's death at the hands of angry locals in April 1521, the little Jesus disappeared until 1565, when it was rediscovered. The oldest church in the Philippines, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño is said to be built over the spot where it was found.

Let us pay homage to the Holy Child

We believe that the Santo Niño is our protector and has the power to grant and answer our prayers.

The image of the Santo Niño is the oldest surviving Catholic relic in the Philippines.

Pope Paul VI issued a Canonical Coronation for the image on 28 April 1965.

Supplications to St. Nino

Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. Jesus, hear us. Jesus, graciously hear us. In every need let us come to you with humble trust. R. Santo Nino, help us. In our all doubts, perplexities and temptations, R In hours of loneliness, weariness and trials, R In the failure of our plans and hopes, R In disappointments, troubles and sorrows, R When others fail us, and Your Grace alone can assist us, R When we throw ourselves on your tender love as our only refuge, R When we are ill and our head and hands cannot work and we are lonely, R When we feel impatient and our cross irritates us, R Always, always, in spite of weaknesses, failings and shortcomings of every kind, R Lamb of God, who take away the sins of the world: Spare us. O Jesus. Lamb of God who take away the sins of te world: Graciously hear us, O Jesus Lamb of God who take away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us, O Jesus. Jesus, hear us. Jesus, Graciously hear us. LET US PRAY O Santo Nino, who has said, “ask and you shall receive; seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you,” Give we beseech you, to us who ask the gift of your divine love, that we may love you with our whole heart, in words and deeds, and never cease from showing forth your praise. Make us, O Lord, to have a perpetual fear and love of Your Holy Name, for you never fail to govern them whom you solidly establish in Your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. CONCLUDING PRAYER O miraculous Santo Nino prostrate before your sacred Image, we beseech you to cast a merciful look on our troubled hearts. Let Your tender love, so inclined to pity, be softened at our prayers, and grant us that grace for which we ardently implore you. Take from us all unbearable affliction and despair. For your sacred infancy's sake hear our prayers and send us consolation and aid that we may praise you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
